Scope and Goal

Over recent years the complexity and requirements of Internet applications have significantly increased. Deployed applications need to cope with heterogeneity of devices as well as networks, and at the same time they have real-time demands that require QoS guarantees. The demands of such applications go in many cases beyond what the current Internet is capable to provide. While so far new functionality to the Internet has been introduced in a patchwork manner, initiatives towards a Next Generation Internet envision a clean redesign, which will match the requirements of future Internet applications.

Although there is a clear trend towards a Next Generation Internet, the transition from nowadays solution to the future Internet raises many important questions, which are of concern to both industry and academia. For instance, the cost of deploying new applications is tightly coupled with identifying the Internet services which will need to be provided in the future. How can such services already be used nowadays even though they may be integral part only of the Next Generation Internet? What can be done to enhance the scalability of such services? This workshop will provide a platform to familiarize and share ideas on trends, visions as well as approaches for the Next Generation Internet.
